For my "Loss of Innocence" project, I will be interviewing my best friend. Her parents recently got divorced (last April) and I know that she is still coping with this issue. This affected me too, because I am very close to her mom. She had to move out of her house, which was in my neighborhood, where her friends live and had to move to two separate houses. She had to move into new neighborhoods where she didn't know anyone, and had to get a new bus stop. I know it was difficult for her, and I wanted to know what was going through her mind at this difficult time. I also wanted to know more about divorce so I could know what my friend went through and how many other families go through this too.
From what information I have collected so far, I've learned many statistics and ways to cope with divorce. I learned that each year in the U.S. 3.6 out of 1,000 couples divorce. Also, 10% of our population in the U.S. are divorced right now. Another fact is that an average of 50% of marriages end in divorce. A lot of these facts surprised me. I also don't want to go through what my friend did. I also don't want to see any of my other friends go through that because it was painful enough seeing her go through it. It was also difficult for me to help her move. I learned that teens going through their parents divorcing need to be equally involved with both their parents or they will pull away from one or the other. The parents also have to not fight with each other or force the child to choose a side.
I have not interviewed my friend yet. When I do, I will be asking her questions about how she coped with it and what her first thoughts were when she heard this devastating news. I also want to get more facts if I come up with more questions to ask her. Throughout this project, I hope to attain a deeper connection with her than I have by discovering what she keeps inside. I also would like to learn more about her on a deeper level. I know mostly everything about her, but I know she is hiding some feelings towards this and maybe about other things and I would like to uncover them.
